MANAGING A VIABLE POPULATION OF INDIAN PANGOLIN (Manis crassicaudata) IN SRI LANKA
Authors: S. JayakodiOf the eight species of living pangolins, Manis crassicaudata is found in Sri Lanka. This species was once a common inhabitant of both the wet and dry zones of the country. However, their numbers have gradually declined due to multiple threats including hunting, wildlife trade, habitat destruction and deterioration. Similarly, the elusive nature of this species has prevented detailed studies of the species thus, biological aspects of this species are not well established. Hence, this letter to editor details the current threats and proposes a five-year plan for the conservation of M. crassicaudata in Sri Lanka with the goals of restoring their populations and habitats with public awareness.
