WATER MONITORS REPEATEDLY DIG UP BURIED CARRION
Authors: L. A.Freed,W.G.D.Priyantha,T.A.H.Smith,R.L.CannMany top predators feed on carrion, which makes them facultative scavengers. However, none of these are known to dig up dead animals and feed on them. We here document that the water monitor lizard in Sri Lanka (Varanus salvator) repeatedly dug up dead dogs that were buried one meter in the ground.
